2007 Opel GTC ConcepT

For the average North American consumer, the Opel automotive brand nameprobably won't elicit much emotional reaction. However, many of us would have seen their alter egos cross our roads in the form of a Saturn Sky or a Saturn Aura, or maybe you've parked beside a Chevrolet Malibu or Cobalt. You got it, Opel is the European subsidiary fully owned by General Motors and with globalization, consumers here are going to see more European inspired cars roll off GM's production lines, like Saturn's new Vue and Astra. Based in Rüsselsheim Germany, Opel has been manufacturing automobiles in Europe since 1898. To give you an idea of the brand's market in Europe, they account for 78 percent of GM's European sales. In 2006 Opel was ranked as the fourth most registered vehicle make in Europe. There were 1,563,196 Opel vehicles sold and a market share of 7.2 percent. The brand'sshare grew in Eastern markets such as Russia, Ukraine and Romania in recent years, where sales doubled from 2005. Opel's most important volume model, the Astra, sold 497,816 units in 2006, achieving a 2.3 percent share of the European market.

At the 77th Geneva Motor Show a few months back, Opel unveiledtheir GTC Concept, which stands for Grand Tourismo Coupe, as well as a refreshed brand logo. As Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director, GM Europe Design comments, “Our team strategized to envision the new essence of Opel – more confident, relevant, and distinctive – in a high performance, yet versatile, four-seat coupe. This style is what to expect of future Opel products.”

The Opel GTC will be powered by a 2.8-liter turbo V6 gasoline engine (the same as featured in the Saab 9-3 XWD) featuring two variable camshafts coupled with an electronic four-wheel drive system and mated to a six-speed manual. The Opel GTC can thrust itself from zero to 60 mph in just under six seconds and tops out at 155 mph. Hmmm... with a little more power could this be Europe's contender to Nissan's Skyline GTR? (There's even a slight profile resemblanceto the Nissan GT-R PROTO Concept, but more comments on design later...) The IDSPlus chassis management system continually monitors and regulates the power distribution betweenfront and rear wheels depending on driving conditions.

This four-seat Opel GTC measures 190.1 inches long by 73.5 inches wide and 56.4 inches high, with a wheelbase of 107.8 inches. From the front, notice the trapezoidal grille that sets the backdrop for the signature Opel bar finished in polished aluminum and centered with the redesigned logo. The vertical brushed aluminum air intake vents give a not so subtle message about this car's athletic capabilities. The headlights bisect these vertical grilles. With the LED driving lamps on, the GTC produces a unique aura of radiance that screams for attention. Catch a glimpse of its profile and notice the 245/40 R20 tires with red signature tread stripes wrapped in a black and polished spoke wheels; they remind me of the wheels on Hot Wheels toy cars. The rear quarter is reminiscent of the BMW6-Series, while the C-pillar is Infiniti G35 coupe-like. Strong lines and the C-shaped indentation on the door complete the muscular image of this vehicle. The rear is equally impressive with an integrated spoiler molded on the trunk. Vertical cues are echoed with vertical aluminum exhaust stacks on each side.

Like a pair of black Prada loafers with the signature red stripe on the heal, the GTC's interior also uses red stripes to accent the leather seats as well as the top point of the leather-wrapped steering wheel. Very Euro-chic indeed. The dashboard and center stack is laid out in matte black finish contrasted with glossy piano black trim pieces. The multitude of center stack buttons is backlit in red to mimic the controls of high end European audio equipment, while the driver enjoys a set of analog gauges encased in metallicrings and lit up in a warm orange glow. The instrument dials are reminiscent of the cars from the 1950s, which creates a unique balance between contemporary and classic design.

In terms of functionality and design, Opel engineers integrated their “Flex4” patent pending interior concept that allows the rear seats to fold flat and line up with the front seats, thereby creating a flat load surface for luggage up to 5.9 feet long. The car becomes essentially either a three-seater or a two-seater, allowing a maximum of 36.0 cu-ft of cargo carrying capacity. Who said a sports coupe can't be practical? In the past, GM's North American spokespeople have alluded to bringing more of their European line up into the North American market, and in the past year have been doing so. The brand that you'll be seeing Opel products under is Saturn, GM's North American import fighter. Besides providing a strong influence over styling, Saturn's forthcoming Astra compact car is a true, blue Opel product, as is the new Vue. It's been said that the Opel GTC is a preview to the next generation Opel Vectra midsize sedan, which is rumored to be our second generation Aura, a vehicle that won North American Car of the Year.

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R

1. Package of Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R package balances this power with practicability - two contradicting factors - to realize a new dimensional multiperformance supercar with ultimate performance for " anyone, anywhere, anytime" . Offering the acceleration performance of a supercar, the Nissan GT-R holds a higher dimension of 'cornering and braking'.

2.Premium Midship Package

The Nissan GT-R adopts a newly developed Premium Midship package, a furtherly advanced form of the FM (Front Midship) package. " Force of the Earth" - Utilizing natural forces to the maximum - Returning to the fundamental principle of what an automobile should be, the vehicle is designed to convert inertia force, generated by the earth's natural forces (gravity) and the vehicle in movement, into tire grip, and change airflow into a stabilizing force. As a result, Nissan developed a drive system especially and exclusively for the new Nissan GT-R called Independent Transaxle 4WD (Nissan patent). This independent transaxle 4WD was unified with the rear final drive unit, and the front and rear were integrated by a carbon propeller shaft, after moving the clutch, transmission, and transfer to the rear of the vehicle for the first time in world.

2-1. Stabilized ground load on all four wheels

On conventional vehicles, there was a tendency for front wheels to loose adhesion from meeting resistance of an invisible wall of air, causing load to slip. The load shifts to the rear as drive force is applied, causing the front wheels to lift, lighter steering. Especially in rainy weather when air density rises, the front wheels lift further, creating a higher possibility for a hydroplane phenomenon to occur. In order to stabilize load-distribution on all four wheels, the basic elements for packaging were reconsidered, to create a package that fully utilizes natural forces of the earth.

Optimized Load Distribution

Discussion on load distribution of conventional vehicles has been focused on the static load distribution during stopping. However, to ultimately heighten the fundamental performances of "driving, cornering, braking" , inertia load shift has been fully separated and independent between the front and rear wheels; the engine load on the front tires and transaxle load on the rear. In addition to this, the transaxle placed below the rear wheel center lowers the center of gravity of the vehicle. The Nissan GT-R, capable of utilizing inertia load, realizes ultimate flat riding comfort with minimal load shift during braking, cornering and any driving situation.

Optimized Dimension

The basic dimension of the vehicle has also been optimized. Run-flat tires with a large diameter and high capacity have been adopted to maximize the tire grip area where power and torque are applied, and optimize power weight and torque weight ratio... Heavy load is placed in the center of the vehicle based on the wheelbase tread. A brake with powerful braking force, is adopted to handle " driving and cornering" . The optimized dimension realizes balanced load distribution on all four wheels, improved cornering performance and stability, pitching convergence, damping force and braking force improvement, and minimized shift in posture.

Fun-to-Drive Range Expanded

As load distribution is evenly balanced on all four wheels with the optimized load distribution and dimension, vehicle behavior is easy to grasp, allowing the driver to start accelerating earlier. In addition, powerful traction of the front wheels helps the vehicle to accurately accelerate in the steered direction. With this newly created " traction steering" driving concept, the fun-to-drive range is widely expanded.

2-2. Balanced combination of powertrain cooling performance and aerodynamics
The newly developed Premium Midship Package has achieved a balance in the improvement of aerodynamics and cooling, two contradictory performances of the powertrain. The Nissan GT-R designers moved the transmission from just behind the engine to the rear. Cooling air passes over the engine, enters a space where the transaxle would normally be, then passes through the floor tunnel to cool the transaxle. This cools the powertrain far more efficiently. Creating this flow from the engine room to through the floor tunnel enables downforce air control under the floor, just as a racing car.

Aerodynamics and Cooling Performance

Working 2 years with Group Lotus in Europe to develop more efficiently, and 1.5 years with Yoshitaka Suzuka in Japan for aerodynamic development using moving belt systems, the vehicle has successfully balanced low air-resistance (2 sets o 2 sets o:0.27) and greater downforce - something formerly believed to be impossible - to realize aerodynamic performance on a par with racing realized . Higher front and rear downforce gives the Nissan GT-R better grip, improves active safety performance, reduces air resistance (Cd: 0.27) and raises fuel-8.

Reduced wind noise

The wind noise during high-speed driving has been reduced by careful reconsideration of the form of each body part. The under floor noise is controlled with the minimized floor through-hole and rectification due to vehicle undercover. This allows the driver to drive at 300km/h on the Autobahn and still enjoy conversation with the person in the passenger seat.

2-3. Reduced powertrain vibration

In the Premium Midship package which adopts an independent transaxle 4WD, powertrain vibration is highly reduced and durability potential at maximum speeds is highly improved. The engine and transmission are independently antivibration mounted, and the transmission placed further away from driver helps clear the engine sound and greatly reduces air noise around the driver seat. This quiet cabin in high-speed driving is made possible by preventing mechanic vibration noise that was formerly generated from the unified engine and transmission at around 4000 revs. The overall length of each the engine and the transaxle, which are separated/ joined by the high vibration damping carbon fiber propshaft, are shorter compared to the conventional FR-4WD vehicle. This highly improves powertrain durability performance at maximum speeds and increases the potential of high-speed driving.

3. Driving position and utility

In the Premium Midship package, the transmission has been moved from just behind the engine to the rear, expanding the foot space in the cabin and creating enough space to design an optimized pedal layout. Also, the adoption of run-flat tires helps to realize a larger and flatter trunk space.

Driving Position

Ideal driving position space for supercar drivers-Horizontal distance from floor surface to hip point: 200mm

-Tilt mechanism from the base is applied to keep the steering wheel angle optimized
-The steering position adjusts to optimized angle. (Tilt: 60mm; telescopic: 60mm
-The largest seat position coverage in supercar market Long seat slide: 228mm, lift amount: 30mm
-The best driving position from short females to tall males / 144cm-190cm Optimized pedal layout for smooth operation
-Pedal stroke extension: 65mm (Fairlady Z (Z33): 55mm)
-Optimized pedal angle: 42.5 degrees (Fairlady Z (Z33):37।5 degrees)
-Acceleration pedal surface slip amount: 4.3mm

Cockpit

To enable the driver to fully concentrate on safe driving especially at high speeds, the door mirror, combination meter and multifunction meter are positioned an uniformed height, minimizing the driver's eye movement while driving.

Trunk room

Thanks to the flat floor by abolishing the spare tire, larger trunk room than the other super cars is realized 2sets of golf bags ( 8.5 inches) or a pair of Special A size suitcase and C size suitcase can be loaded. (Trunk room height:435mm, length:850mm, width (maximum):1470mm)
